5 Ways to Instantly Feel Happier
Sometimes all we need is a few concrete ways that help boost our mood, make us feel happy, and help to start our day off better because let’s face it, life is HARD. Truly, there is no greater way to ruin your day than starting off frustrated, upset, or feeling like you are already failing.
Below I share my top 5 simple ways to instantly put myself in a better mood. And let me tell you, they have been such an easy material to implement into my daily routine. The best part is you can rotate between all of them throughout the week, do 2-3 of them every day, or simply do them all every day. That commitment is up to you and what works best for you! Let’s dive in!

1. Take A Gratitude Walk Outside
You might be wondering what a gratitude walk is. This is a walk (or run if you want to run instead of a walk) where you practice mindfulness. No phone, no music, just listening to the sounds around you. It’s a time when you reflect on things you are grateful for. It’s much like mindfulness journaling but being outside and moving while enjoying the nature around you. I typically will choose 3 things I am grateful for to start and then I will use those as my ‘umbrella’ and figure out the little things I am grateful for beneath those umbrellas.
2. Treat Yourself
Make yourself a yummy coffee drink this morning instead of your typical black coffee. Gift yourself a new pair of shorts for completing a week of workouts. Make your favorite baked good and indulge in the sweetness a little bit. Whatever ‘treating yourself’ may look like to you, enjoy it. My favorite way to treat myself is through sweet treats. It’s my motivation to reach my goals for the week - I know it sounds silly but sometimes the simple things in life are just what you need.
3. Make A Playlist of Your Favorite ‘Happy’ Songs
You know those songs that you label “This is my jam”? Yeah, those are the songs you want to add to this playlist. It’s those songs that make you feel like you have a pep in your step or bring you so much joy you could dance to them in public. It’s the ones that get you going in the middle of a workout that brings an endorphin boost and makes you feel unstoppable. The songs remind you that life is too short not to enjoy it. When you hear a song and have those feelings, add it to your playlist - then listen to that thing every morning or when you need a quick boost!
4. Listen to a Self-Love Journaling Meditation
We all have negative beliefs about ourselves that aren’t true and I’m sure you’re wondering how to rid yourself of those lies. I have found that self-love journaling meditations are extremely helpful in that regard. I use an app called InsightTimer on my phone to find free meditations and journaling prompts. You can read about InsightTimer and all my favorite resources that it provides in this blog post.
5. Make Plans for Something to Look Forward to
There’s always excitement in looking forward to something. This plan doesn’t have to be a grand travel adventure (although it could be). Something as simple as ‘I’m going to go thrift shopping this afternoon to try to find something I’ve been looking for’. Or ‘I’m going to take a walk this afternoon when the sun comes out’. Having these simple things to look forward to in our day, week, month, or year delivers delight in our lives in one form or another.
